Hello to new members and to those peeping in. Lat year I hosted Fandom 50 on my own journal and I decided this year to make a community for Fandom 50. I understand there is a Fannish 50 out there, but I did not k nkw this. I got permission in 2024 from the person who originally hosted Fannish 50. I am not affiliated with the new one. You are welcome to join us here and share all your fandom love and opinions.

Our loose bunch of rules:
!. Join by filling out the form on the first post.
2. Write posts about fandom.
3. Share them with a link or by reposting them here.
4. Read and enjoy other people's fandom posts as well.

You can share any posts you've made this year so far. I got a late start because of health issues and a bit of existential dread.

Fandom 50

Kind of late for a first entry but here is one.

Has fandom changed or have I?

I was never in a fandom until the 2000’s. I did not know what a ‘zine was. I did not know what a con was. I never heard of fanfiction. I was a Star Wars fan from way back.

I got into the LOTR fandom right after the first movie came out. It was quite hostile, to be honest. There were wars between character writers and real person writers, between shippers of different pairings, between hetters and slashers. It was ugly. There was gatekeeping then, too.

I decided early on that I came into this not to fight but to enjoy and I did. I had my own website and ran a Yahoo group that hosted at least 100 stories a week in its heyday. I welcomed all. It wasn’t perfect but it was good.

Is today different?

I think so. I think we have a reflection of our divisive society in fandom. There are things we’re not ‘allowed’ to write now because they might upset someone. There are people who want to police Ao3 to make sure it doesn’t hurt their feelings and that it does reflect their ‘moral’ codes. An example is someone once complained because characters were eating meat and I did not warn for it.

Ao3 was born to combat gatekeeping and censorship in fandom. Other sites caved. Fanfic dot com made their site completely shite when they kicked all the adult stories out. I never bothered with them again. Livejournal was sold once then again to some Russian oligarch who decided to purge all adult anything, because there were rumblings of kiddie porn, and by that, I mean stories with underage fictional characters. Ao3 was born out of frustration over these events and others like them.

So what do you do about these things?

As of today, we do still have freedom of speech here in the US, where Ao3 is based. I say let people write what they will, as long as they are not inciting specific violence. Writers write violence, rape, child abuse out of a need for catharsis many times. Or maybe they are angry and rather than take it out on a real person, they write something violent. Let it be. We write for our own reasons and we don’t owe any explanations of those to anyone.

Oddly enough, the young seem to be the ones who want to gatekeep. Life is hard, kids. If you don’t want to read certain kinds of fiction, then DON’T CLICK ON IT. It’s that simple.

Fandom has changed but not that much. There will always be those who want more rules and to control others. That’s life. We must guard against that and keep fandom and fans free to express themselves.

March turned out to be some poking at fandoms, some grumbling, some returning to other fannish activities and a bit of navel-gazing and planning, all things being equal.

* Ever Crisis in a crisis (of writing). or something. -- a far-too-long post in which I both praise the writing of the first year of Ever Crisis: FFVII and then detail how boy howdy how that has changed

* zines and FF and zines and -- in which I gaze at my navel about making zines and get at least halfway to maybe committing to a Final Fantasy-flavoured (per?)zine

* fire and emblems and pixels and time -- some babble about Fire Emblem hacks and fan translations on the one hand, really needingwanting to get back to learning to code PICO-8 games on the other

* collecting Marfs; filling fannish suitcases and going home -- more on Fire Emblem and my Marth acquisitions, with a side-order of eyeing the Granblue Fantasy 11th anni with baleful expectations

* okie, so *pulls up britches, takes breath, tightens tinhat* Granblue -- a lot of words spilled about the state of the game as seen by me

* *has straightedge, needs nippers* -- getting back into gunpla building with a side of GWing anticipation

* the hunt for great white Wing whales -- kind of about Wing, mostly about print material scarcity and getting your fannish interests while you can

* blue plastic bits, blue sword-swingers -- building my first Master Grade gunpla, yet more Marfs, and a plush Pac-Man

Iiii ... am surprised by this number and don't really expect to repeat it often >.>;;

Hi all! I'm using [community profile] fandom50challenge to remind myself to post about what I'm doing and working on.

As such, here are four posts about getting back into gunpla/plamo, the Fate/ series, nerd purchases, and more. There are pictures but I've tried to keep them fairly small.

Hopeful future topics include more on zines, writing and archiving, and more random fun.

Hello! It's my first time doing a fandom50-type challenge! I hope to get as far as I can as possible, though 50 sounds far out of reach. My first post is about the Netflix show, Trillion Game.

banner with the title of the post using a screencap from the movie Fight Or Flight (2025)
List of media mentioned in this rambling essay:

Supernatural (2005) [S01E04: Phantom Traveler], Assassins (1995), Live Free Or Die Hard (2007), Skyfall (2012), Turbulence 3: Heavy Metal (2001), Flight Risk (2025), High Forces (2024), Con Air (1997), Fight Or Flight (2025), Trap (2024), Bridgerton (2020) [Season 2], Cliffhanger (1997)

Doesn't matter if it's a hijacking or a natural disaster or demons on a plane--there's just something about films that show the flying tin can in the sky under attack that just does it for me. The structure tends to be rather formulaic, of course: the basic setup involves a plane, some sort of danger, a (more often than not reluctant) hero, a plucky flight attendant, and, for the best of the best, some sort of contact on the ground (make it a hacker and I'll love you forever, but we'll get to that particular trope later!)

I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Alexcat, female, a little past middle age, an MCU and Tolkien fan though I write in many fandoms. I live in a rural area in a red state so not a lot of fannish folk near me. I have one hubby and not really any other family. Fandom is home tio me and I like it to be a safe place fir all.

I write and I crochet blankets and shawls and such. I'm hoping to spend more time here at DW since I've given up toxic social media sites like Facebook. Never was on Twitter or Instagram much anyway. I am at Tumblr(alexcat45) and Discord(alex_writes).

Please feel free to ask me any questions AND share with us as much (or as little) as you wish in introduction to you.

What are you fannish about?
♥ Movies?
♥ Hedgehogs?
♥ Baking?
♥ Fictional characters?

Why not post about all of them this year? This is a challenge to make fifty posts about fandom things. They can be whatever kind of posts you’d like - movie reviews, recs, a story about meeting a fellow fan, cosplaying … anything!
The challenge runs for a year (well, 10 months), so a pace of one post per week plus a couple would do it.

If you’d like to do a theme, feel free. Some ideas:
♦ 50 fictional characters that I want to meet in real life
♦ 50 fanvid recs
♦ 50 television episodes that were lifechanging
♦ 50 fanfic plots I’ll never write

You don’t need to do a theme if you don’t want to. You can make fifty random fan-adjacent posts.

If you’d like even more structure or if you’d like to share your Fandom 50 with others, you can commit to the challenge by signing up.

To sign up, comment on this post with the following:

Post a link here to the community for each fandom 50 entry you make on your journal.
